Wildlife Crossing, Phase 1 project introduction Liberty Canyon is the best remaining location for creating a wildlife passage at the 101 freeway within the zone of continuous development from Westlake Village on the west to the 405 freeway on the east. The wildlife passage enhancements proposed for Liberty Canyon consist of two phases: The Underpass Improvements of 2018, and the Wildlife Overpass slated for 2022.

The new bridge allows the federally endangered southern steelhead trout access to over 4.5 miles of habitat in Arroyo Sequit Creek. Arroyo Sequit is one of three creeks in the Santa Monica Mountains that still has a wild population of steelhead trout.
